Welcome!
Jorge A. Montes grew up in a small town in South Texas called Zapata. After high school graduation in 2001, he attended Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. Soon after, in 2005, he obtained his BS in Biomedical Science with Summa Cum Laude honors.
He started his pursuit of medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and obtained his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) degree in 2009.
Medicine is a fantastic career, but he fell in love with Ophthalmology. This passion led him to pursue a career in Ophthalmology but not before completing a one-year internship in Internal Medicine at University Health System (UHS)/UTHSCSA.
After that, he started his Ophthalmology residency in 2009 and finished in 2013. After completing his training, he worked at UT Health in San Antonio for 4.5 years. While there, he had roles that included Medical Director of the Texas Diabetes Institute and Associate Program Director of the Ophthalmology Residency Program.
He moved to the Rio Grande Valley to be closer to home and is honored and privileged to have the opportunity to work at DHR. The growing need of our community led DHR to establish the DHR Health Eye Institute in 2018, where he is currently employed. He also serves as volunteer faculty at the UTRGV School of Medicine.
